The standardization was a compromise between the two brands, so that each brand was getting half of its patented design with the new standard. Currently the right handlebar controls the throttle and, separately, the front brake via lever. The left handlebar actuates the clutch, the indicators and horn. The right pedal operates the rear brake, whilst the left is the shifter (few motorcycles are automatic).
I agree that standardization is sometimes helpful, when it's neutral. Which side was made standard? The Harley side or the Indian side?
