This is your greatest substack yet and I am glad to see that you tackled the subject of our obscene school budgets. You are 100% correct- throwing money at a problem doesn't solve it. I live in uber wealthy Putnam county, your neighbor to the south, and I am urging everyone I know to Vote NO on the upcoming budget request as it is unaffordable.

Why is it that the more students we lose the more we have to pay in school taxes? Our teachers have a 50 page contract that you have to be a lawyer to really understand everything that's in it. I do know this- our $300K school super could never make anything like that in the private sector based on his qualifications and actual work load. Same with many of the teachers and administrators who are all in the 6 figure range of salaries.

These people have pensions and benefits that taxpayers like myself and most of the town can only dream about. School employees have quite a safety net and it is very difficult to fire anyone who works in the District, no matter how egregious the offense. There is just no comparison between those who pay and those who are paid by our property taxes.

Which is another subject we should discuss- the unfairness of the Property Tax. You could do a whole substack on that one with your Libertarian background. Suffice to say that for one thing, we are being taxed on unrealized gains. We built our house very cheaply way back when- under $200K. Yet the assessment today has skyrocketed to over $700K. Allegedly that's what we could get if we sold it, but what if we don't want to sell?

Here's a great article on that topic:

Keep up the great work and let's keep this conversation going. I often feel like we are fighting for our lives in this godforsaken, over-taxed state.

I don't know about "classroom fundraisers"...I do know that public schools have become places where parents donate the bodies, minds, and souls of their children to the devil, and turn the school grounds into a happy hunting playland for pedophiles through NY Education law 23B! #ProtectOurKids! #Dunkirk2.0!
